GENERAL RULES ELIGIBILITY

Junior (Precollege) Division: Any youth under the age of 20 at the time of the competitions who has never enrolled in college as a regular student may enter one or more of the pre-college contests.

Senior (College) Division: Any musician 25 years old at the time of the competitions or younger than 25 may enter one or more of the college-level contests.

Prohibited entry: Previous winners of any Corpus Christi Symphony or Victoria Symphony performance prizes may not enter a concerto contest; current students of 2009 contest judges are ineligible to enter any contest.

JUDGING

Judges may call for any repertoire listed and may interrupt performances. Judges may declare "no winner" in any contest if the performances do not meet minimum standards for artistic performance. All prizes are awarded at the discretion of the judges. Decisions of the judges are final.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

CONCERTO COMPETITIONS:
Contestants must select from available orchestral repertoire a complete solo concerto (or one concert piece for solo instrument with orchestra).

SOLO COMPETITIONS:
In general, three compositions of contrasting style and/or period are required. Most sonata movements serve as complete compositions. However, when a movement merges with the following one, the esthetic unit is a complete composition.

AUDITION RECORDINGS

Recordings must meet the individual contest rule requirements. In other words, the repertoire on the application recordings does not have to be the same as that intended for the live auditions in Kingsville, but must satisfy the contest requirements. Audio CDs or video DVD's (none in PAL format) will be accepted.

CONCERTO COMPETITIONS:

  • All concerto contestants must also enter the Solo Competitions.
  • Concerto contestants must submit a complete (all movements) concerto or concert piece for solo piano with orchestra.
  • Due to the expense and time considerations of recording a complete concerto with an accompanist, only one concerto movement of the applicant's choice must be accompanied on the applicant's recording. Additional concerto movements may be unaccompanied, but must be submitted on the recording.
  • There is no time limitation for performance for the audition recording.
  • One concerto movement of the contestant's choice (or portions of non-concertos selected by judges) will be performed in the initial live audition in Kingsville. If the contestant progresses to the semifinal competition, other movements will be auditioned.
  • In the final competition, the contestant may perform the movement of his/her choice after consultation with the competition judges.
  • SOLO COMPETITIONS:

  • Contestants should submit a recording exceeding a performance time of 15 minutes of his/her own performance of the three required compositions.
  • There is no time limitation for performance for the audition recording.

  • LIVE AUDITION

  • All performances at live auditions shall be from memory.
  • The repertoire for the live audition does not have to be the same as for the recorded audition, but must satisfy the same requirements as the recorded entry.
  • The contestant must submit, with the entry materials, a list of the repertoire that he/she intends to perform in the live audition.
  • After his/her entry is received, repertoire changes will not be allowed without approval of the contest directors, and, if so requested, of the competition staff accompanist.
  • Prior to the live audition in Kingsville, each contestant must submit one legally printed copy of each of the compositions in his contest repertoire. The judges may use this copy for reference.
  • No illegally reproduced copies will be allowed!

  • ACCOMPANISTS

Contestants may use their own accompanists. To obtain a staff accompanist, the contestant must, at the time of entry, submit a written request for an accompanist, submit a music copy with instructions for interpretation, and pay the staff accompanist's fee.

    The accompanist fee is:

    • $ 100 for the concerto competition

If a contestant is accepted but decides to withdraw, all but $5 of the accompanist's fee will be refunded only if the entrant notifies the directors of withdrawal before March 16, 2009. Music copy submitted for staff accompanists will be returned upon request. If an applicant requesting a staff accompanist is rejected, all but $5 of the accompanist's fee will be refunded and music copies will be returned.

In emergencies, when a personal accompanist becomes unavailable, the contestant should contact the directors at once. If cancellations in the staff accompanists' schedules allow, accommodation by a staff accompanist may be possible. The competitions will bear the cost for staff accompanists in semi-finals and finals. Extra rehearsals other than for the concerto semi-finals and finals may be arranged at staff accompanists' convenience and contestants' own expense.

    SCHEDULING

Assignment of staff accompanist, rehearsal date and time, and initial live audition time will be included with notification of acceptance.
